Keeping Connected During Your Loved One's Stay

We’re focused on care that is truly patient- and family-centered at OU Medicine, and family members are an essential part of the care team. Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 pandemic requires that we limit the number of people who may enter our facilities, including immediate family members. This policy demonstrates our commitment to high-quality care that ensures safety for patients, visitors and staff members.

Now more than ever, we’re innovating and making improvements to partner with families to care for and support their loved ones. Patients who are in regular contact with families experience less anxiety, improved outcomes, reduced length of stay, better discharge planning and fewer readmissions.

During this temporary time of restricted visitation, we want to ensure our care team members partner with our families in the following ways.

  • Patients can provide their code numbers to family members upon admission. The code number allows your family members to receive information when they call the unit for updates.
  • Patients to use personal devices or an OU Medicine iPad to connect with loved ones.
  • Patients are encouraged to include loved ones in important conversations with our care team, including physician rounds. If patients are unable to do so, our staff will try to connect with a patient’s loved ones at least once per day.
  • Patients are encouraged to include their family members in discharge instructions. We know patients are safer at home when their families are included in the education process.

3. Connect Virtually: Find time each day for FaceTime, Google Duo, WhatsApp, Skype
